This Psalm is a victory song, in the face of what looks like a losing game. This is a song sung BEFORE the victory had come.
The Psalmist is declaring a fearless trust in God though the continents breakup and sink beneath the resurging waters. Though means: despite the fact that, or even though.
The Psalmist says in this chapter, despite the fact that the earth has given way, mountains have fallen into the sea, waters are roaring, and mountains are quaking, I am not afraid because God is my refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble.
The nations, our nation, our city, our families are in trouble. Every time you turn on the news the land is giving way to rage, murder, hatred, natural disasters, and perversion.
We need a triumphant confession. We need voices lifting up the name of a victorious God. We need a hopeful sound of confidence that God is a safe place. God is strong and present for each devastation and need.
Verse 4 says; “there is a river whose streams make glad the city…” The river is the “channel” by which God brings forth the rain out of His storehouses. Where God lives there is a channel that pours out sustaining blessings and strength. Where God is we won’t fall. God will help. When He lifts His voice and we join Him, the earth melts.
Come and See the works of God. He makes wars cease. He breaks the bow and shatters spears. He burns shields with fire. (vs 8)
We declare today that our God is the God who ends wars.
We ask Him to end the war between nations, between races, between denominations, and between family members. Our God breaks apart our weapons of hate, bigotry, and violence. Our God shatters cruelty and power-hungry dominance. Our God shatters the spears we are throwing at each other. He heals the pain.
Verse 10 says; “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth…”
“Be still” in the Hebrew means ENOUGH! STOP!
Isn’t it time we declare with the Psalmist ENOUGH! Enough of the damage and pain we are bringing on each other, enough of the enemy gaining ground in our homes and city.
We take these days to fast, pray, and sing knowing that He is the God who WILL BE exalted over all the earth, all the wars, all the turmoil, and all the pain.
Despite the fact that our world looks like it is falling apart and there seems to be no hope, we look beyond what we see to WHO we know. We know that Jehovah is God, the LORD ALMIGHTY is with us.
We sing His victory today before we see it manifest. We declare the triumph of our God.
