“NEXT” January 8
Day 2 “Listen”
I personally am at a juncture of change in my life. My son is now married, my baby girl goes off to college in the fall, I turned 50 last year (not a spring chick anymore). This season is unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and I feel like I’m in the dark.
We are in a time in history where the seasons are changing, standards are changing our culture is changing , our churches are changing, our children are changing & the world we used to know is changing at a rapid pace. It all feels like we are walking around in a dark, strange land. It’s a land of unpredictability and even scary at times. If I’m honest for me the question of “What is next?” causes me to be fearful.
What is coming next in the world? What will my life look like without my children in the house? For the last 26 years all I’ve known is being a mother. I know the Lord doesn’t want me to be afraid. I know he wants me to trust him. But what are all of us to do with the looming unknown NEXT of life?
I believe Jesus is saying: Who listens to me you will lie down in safety and will be secure, without fear of evil. Proverbs 1:33
Listen for I will speak of excellent things… Choose My voice instead of silver, my knowledge rather than gold Proverbs 8:6, 10
Blessed is the man who LISTENS to me- watching daily at my gates- waiting at my door -whoever finds me finds life. v34
My dear family – everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak James 1:19
We all are full of guesses, assumptions, and opinions of what we need next- of what we want next -even of what we think God wants next for us. But James under the unction of the holy spirit tells us Ssshhh! Quiet yourself. Quiet your mind. Quiet your expressions and be still. I know that’s way harder to do in this hour with all of the ways that we get to express ourselves but we are simply lighting our own fires. We are leaning on to our own understanding and that ends up in torment. We wonder why we have no peace. We wonder why were full of anxiety. We aren’t quiet enough to hear God give us His comfort , His will, His strategy, & His wisdom.
Next must begin with listening. In 2019 we must begin to train ourselves to put our minds under the voice of God. We must fight back against the clamor or we will never know the NEXT . We won’t have hope, (a joyful expectation) because all we will have is our fear without His promises.
John 3:29 John the Baptist said I stand and listen because He is my friend … He goes on to say he is full of joy when he hears Jesus’ voice! This time of prayer and fasting is a perfect way to begin a posture of quiet waiting at his door – listening for His voice so we can actually move into joy.
Next -begins with listening
