“NEXT” January 7
Day 1 “Let’s make this Fast Different”
Luke 4:1-14; Mark 1:12-13
So we enter day 1 of setting ourselves apart for 21 days of prayer and fasting and leaning into Jesus. We are looking for God and what’s next.
Let’s make the next 21 days about that and not get stuck on the negative connotations that bombard a fast with thoughts of suffering, and starving, and just getting through the 21 days. Let’s make this year and this fast different!
Let’s look closer at the model for fasting. This is the story of Jesus in Luke 4:1-14. He is led into a desert /wilderness / time of fasting by the Holy Spirit. Did you see that? Jesus is drawn out of where he lives to a time of fasting by the Holy Spirit. So, he is not alone. He has the Holy Spirit with him. Already it’s 2 against 1 before Satan and darkness ever shows up.
I love Mark’s gospel account (Mark 1:13). He says that Jesus is driven by the Spirit to fast and is in the wilderness where he is with wild animals and the angels are ministering to him. Say what? Now Jesus has the Holy Spirit and an army of angels with him to fight the darkness!
Let’s see this fast as different! See yourself as being drawn, being driven by the Holy Spirit of God to fast. See yourself as being accompanied by heaven and warring angels. See yourself as having the Holy Spirit with you and that it is a time where God is drawing your enemy Satan into a fight that neither he nor hell can win! It’s a divine setup!
God has brought you to this place to win a war against all your earthly appetites, all your needs to succeed, and your need to be seen by the world. When you come out of this 21 days “NEXT” awaits you as it did Jesus. At the end of His fast Jesus returned to where He lived in the power of the Spirit and a report went out everywhere about Him. (Luke 4:14)
Thought: This is not an exercise in ascetics it is God’s leading and accompanying into what is next for me.
